Probably, I might have made a big boo boo when I was trying to install MythTV on my Kubuntu whereby I had a TV tuner which I can't seem to get it to work "YET". Anyway, while in the midst of installing MythTV, apparently it had to work with MYSQL, and unfortunately I just kept on clicking next, next, next without even realizing what I was doing. Anyway, to cut long story short, I ended altered a few SQL as well as some command line from the boot up menu, causing pretty much problem for me on Kubuntu. Anyway, I can't remember what I need to do, but most likely I'll try Fedora first and see how it goes.

Speaking of which, I'm currently downloading Fedora as we speak. Funny thing was that, when I tried to download using the Windows bitcomet software, my computer sort of like freezes after 30 mins of download. So this morning I tried downloading with KTorrent, and the best part is that, my computer doesn't freeze on me. So I guess, it's bye bye Windows. hehe.. Apart from that Kubuntu seems to be a very nice Linux OS if you intend of jumping ship, where it pretty much works well like Windows. Just that you might need to get used to a few features as well. And the best thing what I love about Linux so far is that, they actually prepared a list of software for you to download. And help you install it automatically. Which I think is pretty cool.

Plus you only download the software that you need! And another thing, again I would like to emphasize is that, whenever you do a major or minor update on Linux. YOU DON'T NEED TO RESTART. Lol. Unlike Windows, which is pretty much of a pain whenever you do an update even for a small section. Any how.. I've found out you can actually run Photoshop on Linux. But the sad part is that, it only works for CS2. Probably they are still trying to upgrade their software for CS3. Fingers crossed :) Apart from that, everything is great! Anyway, will stop here for now. Got to do a bit of backup before installing Fedora. Wonder would it be better :P Keep you guys posted.

Forget About Windows!

Ok. I've been using Ubuntu and Kubuntu for almost 3 weeks already. And I have not been using Windows ever since then. Apparently I've been sticking to Linux without any problems :) And I'm glad that I've made that decision. Despite of the lack of software they provide, but it was good enough for me to get my work done. Not to mention, that Kubuntu apparently works like Windows interface which I was pretty amazed. I've managed to install Suse on my Desktop, but apparently it didn't quite worked out well for me, so I ended up using back Kubuntu. Probably it's because I'm more familiar with the interface, and it's user friendliness.

Haven't been posting much here lately because I've got a sudden rush of work that needed to be done. But I did try a fresh install windows and my Ubuntu to start up. Despite the fact that the spec on my desktop was way better compared to my laptop, I managed to run Ubuntu and get into the desktop before my Windows system finished loading. So I'm very impressed with what Linux could actually do. I've still yet to install my Brother Printer, which I'm still having some slight issues, until I can find the installation cds. But apart from that, everything seems to be in working order.

Anyway, I've managed to close a deal with a company that is currently setting up. So I offered him to choose Linux over Windows simply because :-
1. Cheaper license
2. Workers won't be able to play games on it (You require to be in root user in order to do any installation)
3. Free from Anti-Virus software
4. No Office License needed. Open Office is just great and sufficient to get the job done!

So it's all good! Will try to keep this page updated as often as I can because of work, I haven't really had the time to play around with Ubuntu and especially Kubuntu, where I find that the KDE 4.1 is really great, and it managed to to allow users to easily migrate from a Windows System to Linux! Have a nice day!

Installing Kubuntu On My Desktop

Last week it was Ubuntu on my laptop, today I finally was able to install Kubuntu onto my desktop. Actually was trying to install Suse instead, but apparently I had problem so I switch to Kubuntu instead. Was trying to install since Friday, but I had problems and I didn't know what actually went wrong. Until finally I found out that apparently the installation disc that I burned was faulty. So I went and re-burn the installation disc for Kubuntu. I believe I'm facing the same problem with Suse, but I ran out of DVD-Rs. So will try it out some other day.

Ok.. On to my thoughts for today. Kubuntu is slightly more like Windows interface, and it's not that difficult to use. So I guess this would be an easier transition for Windows Users, and I've still yet to explore all the features as I just managed to install it and couldn't wait but to blog about it. Hehe.. Though it uses konqueror as it's web browser, and a lot of their programs I noticed which replace the letter C to K instead. For example like the Terminal Console, they renamed it to Konsole instead. Contact to Kontact, and their instant messenger is Kopete. So I guess it's all good..

At the moment I'm updating Kubuntu now, and so far it's pretty cool running once again on Linux. Probably I should consider other Linux OS such as Fedora or Mandrake. Hehe.. You could say I'm pretty much addicted to Linux now. But it's all good. Anyway, will update more on both Ubuntu as well as Kubuntu. :) You guys have a good day.

Day 5 : Linux 5, Windows 0

After using Linux for 5 days, I don't seem to miss Windows much. Despite the fact that I couldn't use Photoshop now, but Gimp seems to be a good alternative. Though it can't do batch processing for RAW files, I guess it's ok for now :)

Current updates is that, apparently when I tried to opened up a previous document from Microsoft Word using Open Office, some how the alignment doesn't seem to look right. I guess it's probably due to the fact of the type of Fonts that was not available in Open Office. Never the less, I haven't miss using Windows so far, so I guess I'll be sticking to Linux for good now.

Today I've tried installing my Targus Laptop Wireless Presenter to see if it works or not. And the answer is Yes! I totally forgotten about this little important tool of mine, until I remember I had to prepare for a presentation. With this able to work with Ubuntu, I guess I wouldn't need to worry so much for Windows. Hehehe. So it's all good! So all in all, I'm sticking with Linux and hopefully I would be able to use the other softwares which are included in Ubuntu. As of late, I've just been doing wordprocessing as well as other web designing. Never the less, I guess I never regret in installing Linux onto my system. As I was a bit skeptical and worried on the first day when I tried installing it.

At the moment I've still yet to think on what to install for now. I've been using Twinkle for my VOIP, and able to install skype which is great. And not to mention that I've been able to install Lampp or Xampp for my webdesign and hosting. So that pretty much covered all my workspace. As for Instant Manager, I'm currently using their packaged software Pidgin. That enabled me to load all my Yahoo, MSN, Gmail, AOL account in that software. So it's really a cool software, but I do miss the older version where they actually pop up the emails whenever a new one comes in. But never the less, this is a great IM thus reducing the amount of other software which requires me to download.

All in all, I'm glad that I decided to make a change and stick to it. In terms of productivity, it has sort of increased and it's less stressing that I keep on looking at the screen. Again, I have no regrets in what so ever installing Linux. I've already completed downloading Suse, hopefully I would be able to install on my desktop. Provided if I'm not tired. It's all good :) Have a nice day everyone!

Day 4 : Downloading Suse For My Desktop

Ok, I'm pretty convinced with Ubuntu already that I've decided to download Suse for my desktop. Lol.. But for my desktop, I would require to do a dual boot instead. Hehe. As much as I want to use Linux, but there are still some certain software that only can be run through Windows. I've tried meddling with WINE but didn't get much success from there. But it's all good.

Seriously, swapping to Ubuntu is pretty much something. Maybe it's because I need to type in tons of code just to install a program or the thrill of trying to get a program to run which pretty much made me hooked on through here. But I've pretty much made up my mind already, when I get my new laptop, I'll be installing Linux on it.. Hehehe.. Yeah, so I can save on licensing, and use it to get a better laptop instead.. Lol.

Basically after using Vista, and I seriously find it complicating compared to Ubuntu. Having been using Windows since 1995, it's really complicated compared to Ubuntu. Seriously. I was introduced to Linux 3 years ago, but unfortunately a lot of my hardware was not able to detect, and I didn't use it because of that reason. But I'm so glad that I don't even need to worry about any drivers now, whereby it can all be detected. Unlike Windows, where I would need to download all my drivers for certain device. But it's all good! Hehehe.

Anyway, I'm pretty optimistic about this change and probably would help company save on big bucks! Hehe. Right now how I wish I have more computer to install. Haha.. Though my laptop has been 3 years old, I feel after installing Ubuntu it's like brand new. Yeah, I'm in love with Ubuntu and even though I've yet to find any problems with it yet.. But I pretty much think that it serves everything already. At least I can get online and get some work done I'm pretty much happy already. Though I can't use Photoshop, but I still can live with it :D

So for those who is afraid of this change, Ubuntu has a live CD which you can actually have fun with it. So it's all good! Have a go, who knows you might love it like I do. Anyway, I've pretty much reduced my gaming time due to the fact that I can't run them on Linux. But it's all good. Play less increase productivity :D

Connecting Ubuntu To Windows Network

Ok. After a few days of researching and looking around for tips, I finally managed to connect to my Windows desktop.. Apparently this is what you need to in the beginning. Installing a Samba client to your system.

1. Run Terminal
2. Enter the following code :-

apt-get install smbclient

3. Enter this code if you want to have it mount on your system for every folder you access (optional) :-

apt-get install smbfs

By doing so this would actually create like a shortcut link which actually brings you to connect to the main folder you access. But you can easily unmount it if that directory isn't the place you always want to connect.

Once you have completed the installation. Run your browser and then do the following.

1. Press Ctrl + L
2. Enter the following code in the box :-

smb://192.168.1.1

3. Enter the password if any, then press connect.

Please take note that IP address must be the IP of the desktop you are connecting to. Relatively you could just click on the network and browse from there. But it would take a longer time for it to show :)

Thus this is how you can connect to your windows desktop with ease. Again, if you have installed No.3 application then it would place a shortcut on your desktop where you can easily remove it by pressing right click on the icon and unmount.

Good luck!

Day 3 : Loving Ubuntu Day By Day

So far I've been pretty gotten used to Ubuntu already.. Now I finally realized why, they said Linux is good whereby you can actually download the software you really need. And apart from that, in terms of loading and shutting down. It's faster compared to Windows. Plus with it's live update from time to time, I don't have to restart unlike Windows once you've done a live update you need to restart the whole thing. This pretty much sux especially whenever I'm either uploading or downloading something to my server. So yeah, basically everything is updated live and you don't really need to restart your computer. Which is very cool...

Ok, the first problem I've encounter is that it doesn't seem to play a movie file and youtube together. I'm not too sure what happened, but I guess it doesn't really matter for me. A good thing is that, it doesn't allow me to turn on everything all at once. Lol. But I don't think it would be good if I was back during the production days whereby I would have winamp, windows media player and at least 10 record studio each playing different track. But it's ok.. I doubt I'll be in that situation for a long time.. Hehehe..

One thing I found out today was that, if I were to place my mouse over the task bar, I could actually scroll up and down each of the program as if I was pressing "Alt + Tab". Apart from that, I realized that every time you need to change or install something you must be in the admin account. So if you don't have the password you can't simply install anything. But one thing with Linux is that I guess I can kiss most of the games goodbye. Lol.. Which is a good thing I suppose. So it doesn't take most of my time :P So more blogging I guess..

Anyway, I've still yet to work with Open Office yet. Opening from Microsoft Office to Open Office is ok. Just not too sure how it would turn out the other way round. Anyway, will do some presentation using Open Office. So I guess it's all good. But anyway, I'm loving Linux already, and probably might install a different system on my computer. Hehehe.. But if I were to do that, I would install a dual boot for it. At least I can use Photoshop lol.. But it's all good.. So let me continue this Saga of using Linux.

Installing Xampp (Lampp) on Ubuntu

One more software I need to ensure that I need to install for my work. What Xampp or Lampp actually does is that it install a server on your laptop, so you pretty much can develop your own site whereby you can create mysql database for it. So you can pretty much create your website offline first, which pretty much saves time because you don't need to wait for your server to refresh. You can have a look at it here Apache Friends Xampp. Very useful for website developers. Ok, these are the steps that I need to do for installing Xampp or Lampp on Ubuntu.

1. Download XAMPP at http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html

2. Run Terminal
3. Enter this code :- (if you downloaded the file on your desktop probably you might need to change to your directory first by typing cd Desktop)

sudo tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.6.1.tar.gz -C /opt

This will install Apache web server with PHP and the MySQL database server.

4. To start the server under your Root User account (you might need to login to su account) type in

/opt/lampp/lampp start

You should now see something like this on your screen:

Starting XAMPP 1.6.1...
LAMPP: Starting Apache...
LAMPP: Starting MySQL...
LAMPP started.

Once it's started then you should be able to use Lampp as usual. In order to see if you have your Lampp has started. This is what you should do.

1. Go to Firefox or any internet browser.
2. Enter this address in the address bar :-
http://localhost

You should be able to access the Xampp page by there already. Very easy to use in creating database and domains :) So have a try there..

But one thing you need to know about Xampp is it's security issues. Yes, apparently if you were to key in my IP address, you would straight away log into my xampp page. And probably can screw up my database. So this is what you actually need to do, to help you prevent all this from happening.

1. Go to terminal and type: (make sure you're in your Root Account)

/opt/lampp/lampp security

It would list out a sets of questions asking you to change your password and all that.. Anyway, happy testing :)

Day 2 of Ubuntu

Managed to survive one day without using any other windows software. Lol.. So what did I learned today? well. I now know you can actually search for an application using the terminal, whereby you don't need to download it from the website, but actually get it installed via ftp. Which is pretty cool..

You enter this code in the terminal :-

apt-cache search program feature

For the program feature you could type in like FTP, softphone, and etc. It's basically an application. But you must be connected to the internet in order for you to do this. Currently I've installed Twinkle Softphone in order for me to use Pfingo to call Singapore at about SGD0.01/min. So I'm pretty glad that I can do that already, and I think this pretty much fulfill all the software that I actually needed.

I've also found out that the movie player pretty much can play FLV files (after updating). So I don't pretty much need to convert most of the FLV that I have on my laptop to avi already :P I haven't looked for the divx plugin yet. Which I think I won't be installing as well due to the amount of space one movie might take. I haven't tested out GIMP to see if I'm able to edit RAW files from there. It's a similar program like Photoshop, but I don't have the time to play around with all these yet.

I've also migrated all my mails into Evolution Mail, but unfortunately for me I accidentally backup the wrong thing for Thunderbird. But I guess it's ok, and I figured out where you're suppose to go in backing up your Thunderbird mails.. But anyhow it's all good. Will post up on how I migrated from Outlook Express to Mozilla to Evolution Mail. Hehehe..

So I'm pretty much happy with Ubuntu. Though I haven't find any problems yet, but I guess I'll be using this for a while. The only thing is just to set up network that's all. I still can't access my Windows Network even though I've already installed Samba on to it. If not I would have a hard time printing :P I've also sorted out everything already, whereby transferring my files from my back up harddisk back to my Laptop. So it's all good.

Installing Skype on Ubuntu

Another software that I seriously need to use. And the speaker was having a blast promoting Linux instead of Windows. And one of the major factor why he was so pro linux is that it is cost saving. Why? Because the OS itself is free. But there are other version that do charge, but which is only a fraction of a cost compared to Windows. Normally these version are for corporate company to run their servers, but for normal daily user which is pretty much free.

Anyway, as he said cost saving is that we don't need to pay so much for anti virus software as well. This is because no one wants to write virus or trojan for linux, so to speak. Because not many people are using it, plus taken a quote from "Note to new Linux users: No antivirus needed" which says :-

Permissions on Linux are universal. They cover three things you can do with files: read, write, and execute. Not only that, they come in three levels: for the root user, for the individual user who is signed in, and for the rest of the world. Typically, software that can impact the system as a whole requires root privileges to run.

Microsoft designed Windows to enable outsiders to execute software on your system. The company justifies that design by saying it enriches the user experience if a Web site can do "cool" things on your desktop. It should be clear by now that the only people being enriched by that design decision are those who make a buck providing additional security or repairing the damage to systems caused by it.

You can read the full article here "Note to new Linux users: No antivirus needed".

But do read the last statement, whereby Linux is not bulletproof. Just that it emphasize stating that, don't run any program which requires the Root (admin) user. If you do just that, you should be fine :)

Installing Java On Ubuntu

Ok.. After going hours on installing java manually, whereby I finally gave up in the end. I found a shorter way in doing it on Ubuntu.

This is what you need to do :-

1. Run Terminal
2. I've pretty much left this blog unattended due to the fact I didn't know what to update in here.. Lol.. Anyway, I think I'll use this place to update my journey on using Ubuntu, which is a Linux based program. Reason why I've decided to use this software was because it's been a long time I've reformatted my laptop and also just a few days ago, my father in law accidentally tripped the cable on my notebook which pretty much got my laptop came crashing down. Yeah, after backing up everything last night, I tried to reinstall my Windows, but unfortunately for me my installation cd didn't really worked, which probably was due to my Cd-Rom pretty much not functioning anymore :P

Anyway, I went and downloaded Ubuntu last nite and managed to burn the image just before I head out to church. So I got back and tried out the latest version of Ubuntu. Why Ubuntu? I dunno, because I pre-ordered a stack of Cds of previous version 2 years ago. And I did a quick search to see which one is the easiest Linux system to be used. Apparently they point out to Ubuntu.. So that's pretty much the reason why I choose it.

After completed installing the software, I was pretty much amazed that it managed to install all the drivers on my laptop. They got my audio and video right, and it's displaying everything very nicely :) The next headache I had was my wireless card. At first I plugged in the Proxim Wireless Lan, but nothing came out. Because I thought it was like Windows, it would ask you for a lot of questions stating that you have inserted a new hardware, and install the driver. So after waiting for like 5 mins, nothing came up I've decided to search the web for some drivers. To my horror, they didn't had any driver for my proxim card. So I was pretty much screw up already by then, till I remembered that I had another wifi card, which has the driver but then it stated needs lots of script to get it running. I was like, thinking probably I should go back to Windows instead. So here I was thinking that this would be a great opportunity for me to finally to try something different, but instead haha I guess my hope came crashing down.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_2pHUP4HdOTw/SIwekV5r0iI/AAAAAAAAACM/1s3paCvMqEI/s320/Network.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5227586877173518882" />

So what I did next was probably just try and see under the System, Administration & Network. Previously there weren't any wireless connection, so I just plugged in my other wifi card, the wireless connection just popped up. So when I click on the properties, it brought me to the wireless setting. And now I could surf the internet without any problems. Probably my Proxim card would have worked as well, but will give it a try and update here later. For me, I think just as long as I got the Internet to work, I can pretty much carry on with my work for the day.

Apart from that, I've managed to install flash, and currently figuring out how to install Java. But my only concern now is how to install photo editors such as Photoshop as well as Lightroom onto Ubuntu. But it would be a good thing though, so instead of editing pictures during "working hours" I prolly can do it at night in front of my PC. Which is also another reason why I've decided to install Linux system. Anyway, will be trying to import my mails from Outlooks Express to Evolution Mail. Hopefully I wouldn't be able to get any problems then.

Another thing about Ubuntu is that, it always prompt for password whenever you want to make any changes or settings to the system. I think it's pretty useful if you have 101 people trying to meddle around with your system. But I guess that's all in security. In terms of performance wise, I noticed that it runs several programs faster compared to Windows. I mean seriously, loading time took less than 3 minutes, where as Windows might take at least about 5 (after clean install). Haven't tried running multiple program at once yet. Prolly will need to do it later. Oh yeah, when I press the Print Screen button, it automatically comes up with the picture format, unlike in Windows you prolly need to paste it in Paint Brush or Photoshop. Not that I'm being bias now, just that I think it's pretty much impressive.

Anyway, I will try using Ubuntu for a week and see how it goes. If I can survive using it for a week, then I guess I wouldn't be returning to Windows with this laptop in a while :) I'll be testing a few more things using Ubuntu and see if it works or not. But I noticed for certain software that doesn't come with an installer you prolly need to do everything on your own.. Lol. Ok. I'll keep this page updated :) Till then, have a nice day.

I Won Chipster RM20

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_2pHUP4HdOTw/R4ti_j5QfKI/AAAAAAAAACE/VB7Cd30i9Nk/s320/DSC00100.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155323042562342050" />

For more details please visit My Personal Blog

More Than Words Performed By Sungha

Was browsing around Youtube.
